A Beach-Lover’s Guide to Los Angeles: Beyond Hollywood

May 14, 2025

When most people think of Los Angeles, they imagine movie stars, Hollywood Boulevard, and Rodeo Drive. But if you ask us? The real charm of Los Angeles lies along its coast, where beach towns offer laid-back vibes, golden sunsets, and seriously good food. Here’s how to make the most of Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches, Santa Monica, and Venice.

Redondo Beach:

Redondo Beach has a super chilled village vibe, perfect for easing into LA life. Start your Redondo adventure with a rummage through Vintage Dirty Laundry on Catalina Avenue for retro fashion and boho treasures. On a warm evening, grab a patio seat at Flyin' Fin Sushi & Seafood in Riviera Village for Happy Hour food and drinks – think fresh sashimi and cold sake on a beautiful evening.

If you’re feeling active, Redondo is also the perfect launch point for an epic bike or e-bike ride along The Strand, a beachfront path that stretches all the way up to Santa Monica. Hire bikes from Hermosa Cyclery or Beach Cities Bike Rentals. Whether you ride the full stretch or just a few miles, it’s the best way to enjoy the coast.

Hermosa Beach:

If you’re cruising north, your first essential stop is Hermosa Beach. Pause for brunch at Martha’s 22nd Street Grill – locals swear by the stuffed French toast and bottomless coffee. Or, for something zestier, head to La Playita, a tiny, unassuming Mexican for tacos and strong margaritas just moments from the sand.

Stick around Pier Avenue for beach bars like Tower 12, especially lively at weekends with live music and casual crowds.

Manhattan Beach:

Manhattan Beach feels a little more polished and upscale but still has that laid-back beach town atmosphere. Even if you don't stop to eat here, wander through boutique shops and beach cafes or simply stroll along the old-school California pier to visit the charming Roundhouse Aquarium (completely free and cute!).

Venice Beach:

Venice is where LA’s weird and wonderful side really shines. Explore the eclectic Venice Boardwalk and murals before heading to The Brig on Abbot Kinney for live music and a cool, unpretentious crowd.

For food, pop into Gjusta, a trendy deli perfect for sandwiches and pastries. And for a true Californian rite of passage, don’t leave without an In-N-Out Burger, go for the Double-Double (the patties are thin enough that it’s just the right amount), and if you’re feeling adventurous, ask for it Animal Style.

Santa Monica:

After winding your way up the coast, you’ll land in iconic Santa Monica. For a bougee dinner book a table ahead at Elephante, aim for the Sunset Room for a beautiful sunset dining experience – plan at least a month in advance and check sunset times!

Alternatively, dine at Calabra, a chic Mediterranean rooftop spot at the Proper Hotel. After dinner, head to The Bungalow for a lively, house-party atmosphere you’ll feel like you’re at the coolest beach house party you accidentally scored an invite to.

Of course, you have to stroll up the Santa Monica Pier touristy but iconic. Grab a drink at Bubba Gump’s or up the end of the pier before the sun sets.

Final Travel Tips:

  • Bike Hire: Easy to find everywhere along the coast – e-bikes are brilliant if you’re going the full Redondo to Santa Monica stretch.
  • Parking: Gets busy, especially at weekends. Arrive early or visit midweek if you can.
  • What to Pack: Sunscreen and an extra layer; even summer evenings by the beach can get chilly.

The bottom line: Yes Hollywood has the glamour, but the real LA magic is along the coast. Catch a sunset, sip a margarita – this is the LA you’ll never want to leave.
